Baby Names 2011 – Top Names of the Year

Babycenter.com recently released their top 100 baby names of 2011.

It is always interesting to see the baby name trends, see what is popular, and what names are becoming less popular.

The top 10 boys names:

And the top 10 girls names:

For the most part I really like most of the top 10 girls names and really hate most of the top 10 boys names. I really don’t like names like Jayden, Caden, Brayden, and stuff like that. When it comes to naming a baby I usually prefer names that are a bit more old fashioned.

Natalie Hegedus Courtroom Breastfeeding – Was the Judge Right?

The breastfeeding in public issue is one that can be beaten to death and I know people have strong opinions on this so I will try to keep this brief.

Recently a lady, Natalie Hegedus, was kicked out of a courtroom for breastfeeding her sick baby. She was in court for a ticket she received for something to do with boater’s safety. She was in the back nursing her baby when the judge called her out embarassing and humiliating her.

Apparently she was fully covered. I am sure we all have seen people breastfeeding where they just let it all go out in the open and I know that makes me a bit uncomfortable but when a woman does what she needs to cover up I really don’t have much of a problem with public feeding. I know some people’s idea of appropriate or discreet is different than others and I wasn’t there so I can’t say for sure what was going on.

I think the judge was a bit harsh on this one. Yeah, it is his courtroom and he is supposed to have some control over what goes on there but did he overstep his bounds a bit here?

Smuggled Honey and Counterfeit Diaper Bags

Pretty much everything of value is counterfeited. You can’t walk down the street in NYC without seeing dozens of knockoff handbags for sale. The internet is full of counterfeit perfume. Even football jerseys are being counterfeited. And according to a post I read today there is even smuggled honey to deal with.

Basically Chinese honey is ultra-filtered which takes out all the pollen and other “impurities” which have many health benefits. Then the Chinese honeymakers sneak their honey into the country and on to the grocery store shelves. It seems like the only safe place to buy honey is from reputable markets or even direct from the farmers.

When buying a designer diaper bag the same principle applies. Make sure if you are going to buy a diaper bag from one of the popular designers you buy it from a reputable source. For the most part the more expensive the bag the more knockoffs there are. Many of these bags look nearly identical to the real product but the quality just isn’t there. They are made from inferior materials and the workmanship is very shoddy. Also you have no idea if there are any dangerous chemicals used in the manufacturing process. All in all it just isn’t worth it to buy a knockoff diaper bag.

Do You Need a Baby Butler?

I was recently reading an article on Huffington Post about baby concierge’s. Basically they help parents and try to take the stress out of everything baby related.

Do I really need someone to buy my diaper bag for me?

They can shop for nursery items, diapers, bottles, and other stuff like that. They can help post-partum. They can help recommend doulas and midwives. Pretty much whatever you need related to a baby they can handle.

But is this anything that is really necessary? Obviously we are all busy people and can use some help but isn’t part of the joy of a baby being totally overwhelmed, tired, and burnt out? If you had someone doing everything for you wouldn’t that take away from how wonderful it is to parent a child?

I kind of see it like hiring a party planner. If I throw a party part of the fun is planning and setting up for it. I don’t want to hire someone else to take care of all the details. Even moreso with a child. I want to be the one doing the shopping, making the mistakes, and setting up the baby’s room.

Sometimes it might be nice to have a helper to carry the diaper bag, stuff the stroller into the car, and other things like that but isn’t that what my spouse is for? Or my parents? Or siblings and friends? Do I really need to pay someone to do all that stuff? Babies are expensive enough!

There are plenty of diaper bags out there primarily designed for ladies. They might be flowery, bright colors, pastels, or something that looks way to similar to a regular purse. But recently there have been a few companies that started putting out diaper bags for dads and diaper bags that men wouldn’t be embarrassed to carry.

DadGear – DadGear is another company started by a couple guys who didn’t want to carry around mom’s flowery diaper bag. They designed a line of diaper bags that is masculine looking and functional.
